Aussie Rules TV Schedules for 2013

The following is a brief summary of the coverage situation followed by the TV schedules.  For a full overview of the coverage please see our detailed summary of AFL coverage in 2013 at our TV Info page.  It has more info than we give on this page.  We also have our TV Q & A at the TV FAQ page (FAQ dormant -- still to be updated for 2013). Another useful reference is the preliminary coverage article for this season and the associated comments.

Nationwide coverage of Aussie rules in 2013 for US fans will be on Fox Soccer Plus.  Fox Soccer Plus (FSP) is the subscription channel counterpart to Fox Soccer and is a separate channel. (Do not assume that if you receive Fox Soccer you also get FSP as they are different). Subscription fees vary by cable company from $5.99 to $14.99 per month and may include other sports channels. Two matches (on average, will vary) will air live on FSP each week beginning with the NAB Cup Final and Round 1 of the AFL season through to the Grand Final. All matches will air on FSP. The Grand Final will be live on FSP.

There is also TV coverage of two AFL matches each week (delayed repeats) on FSP or FUEL, These matches may be edited to 2 hrs.

Additional coverage for US and Canadian viewers is on AFL-TV, a new service from Rightster and the AFL. It is an internet service and requires payment.
There is live coverage of all 8 matches per round This is a subscription service for video and fans can sign up here.

For Canadians, TSN2 will have one match per week, usually live.  That match will be available on TSN.ca for 48 hours.

This web page will have schedules below for all networks each week all season, updated as information becomes available.  Click the following links for schedule info on Fox Soccer Plus, plus TSN Canada, and FUEL.

International readers should check our
international TV page (revised for 2010; info for 2013 not yet available).
If you have a shortwave radio, be sure to check out our shortwave frequencies page (last revised in 2008).

We have weekly radio listings for the AFL at our AFL Radio page updated continuosly).

Re: Complete AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

I'd like to say that TSN is doing a truly terrible job at broadcasting AFL. They cover a measly 1 game a week, they change up the schedules and in general give insufficient notice of schedule changes.

So here I am, a Magpies fan sitting in Canada, without access to ESPN360 and neither fox.com.au nor the AFL web sites will even dish out a video highlights clip to anyone sitting outside Australia.

Sentanta did a much better job - covering games live and running the highlights show.

I'm sorry, but occasionally seeing one game in HD does not make up for it.

AFL get you act together.

Re: Complete AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

AFANA has been having a tough time getting information on what TSN / TSN2 / TSN.ca will have available each week in time to post it here.  We received the information for this past weekend overnight Thursday night resulting in at least one of the matches going to air before we could even post it.  We will keep working on the issue so that the last 2 weeks of the 2009 season are posted more quickly.

In fact, TSN is providing the Collingwood v Adelaide match on demand on TSN.ca this weekend and the Western Bulldogs v Brisbane match was provided on a delayed basis at 03:00 EDT on Saturday.  It's just too bad we weren't informed in time to provide this to fans so they could take advantage of it.

As to the general issue of how TSN is doing, opinions seem to vary.  We have received some very good reports and others such as yours.  See our article on the new coverage and the comment thread there on TSN.   Fox.com.au is not going to provide you with anything, as they do not have rights to do so.  The AFL is working with TSN to see that TSN.ca provides similar offerings as ESPN360 but obviously giving fans sufficient notice is a big issue.  AFANA is making the AFL aware of the complaints not that this is much solace.  The problem though is at TSN right now not the AFL.

Share those sentiments. We just missed out on seeing "a modern classic" and likely don't have any chance of seeing it in Canada at all.

Re: Complete AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

Fortunately in Canada, it's very easy to avoid the scores. Through a combination of TSN's taped game in HD, Aussie Sport TV, and TSN's Video on demand, I've been able to watch every match of the finals so far, including the Pies/Crows match. However, this process hasn't been without frustration. So far TSN hasn't edited game content from the matches which is airing on its main networks, though commercials do seem to be placed at odd times. This is much better than during the home and away series when large chunks of playing time were cut out by TSN. The TSN video on demand is really poor quality. I do hook my laptop up to my HD TV to watch the matches, but the video quality is jerky and lower resolution than I'd like. I imagine that someone just getting into the game wouldn't bother so if we want to grow the game in North America, this isn't a long term solution. Finally, Aussie Sport TV actually has somewhat better quality than TSN's video on demand. However, the delay in uploading matches is unsatisfactory. The final two matches of the first round were only uploaded on Thursday last week.

For next year, I'm hoping for 2 live and 1 taped broadcast per week during the home and away season and the entirety of the finals series. 3 games per week would give enough variety to cover off all the headlining games and to show enough of all 16 teams. This type of schedule would be identical to what we enjoyed on Setanta last year. You'll probably tell me I'm dreaming, but I can always hope.

Re: Complete AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

Paul,

I sympathize.  I didn't see it either.  All I can do here is repeat what I've posted elsewhere:  we're aware of the issues with TSN and we've made the AFL aware.  The way this year evolved with Setanta did not offer much of a position of strength for the AFL to negotiate with ESPN and TSN nor has it offered the usual off-season chance to work out the kinks.  We're very lucky to have anything in either Canada or the USA.  It will get better though.  I also know that if I had a dollar for every e-mail we got over the past 3 1/2 years complaining that "no one gets Setanta" and the AFL should get the sport "back on ESPN / TSN" I'd be a wealthy guy.

I know that none of is much comfort.  However, fans have to understand that everyone in North America is against it.  AFANA is continuing to work with the AFL and I can personally assure you that the AFL gets it.  Hang in there folks.

Re: Complete AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

How can we lobby TSN to be more pro-active with regard to AFL especially now at finals time.  I appreciate any efforts you have made but sincerely want to see the remaining finals broadcast here in Canada.  My father is visiting from Melbourne and he is former Melbourne Demon's legend Noel McMahen and I promised him he would be able to watch the finals. So best of luck getting TSN on board and if you could provide an email address so we could lobby them ourselves that would be appreciated.

Match Selection by TV Networks

Hi Brendan,

Since you don't mention which of the four networks you are referring to, I will assume it is Setanta US or Setanta Canada.

I can understand that you want to see two teams that are fighting for the top end of the ladder.  However, that is not the only criteria used in selecting the matches we see.

Based on my conversions with Setanta and 14 years of following the networks who have broadcast footy, here is a primer on match selection  (you can also read this topic discussed in our TV FAQ) [not necessarily in order]:

1) available time slot.  Since Setanta takes live coverage, they have to find 2 or more matches a week that don't conflict with the other live sports they cover.
2) the need to show all 16 AFL teams at least a couple of times per season.   AFANA has polled fans of footy every 3 years since 1996 (the next poll is up this summer).  The results show that all 16 AFL clubs have significant followings among American and Canadian fans.   That means that Richmond and Melbourne fans want to see their club, too, this year.  Neither club is likely to be in the top 8 at any time in 2009.
3) blockbuster, traditional, and key matches during the year.  For example, Collingwood v Carlton, ANZAC Day, matches that determine who gets in the final 8 at the end of the season, etc.
4) availability of the feed from the networks in Australia.  Sometimes, for technical reasons or availability of fiber capacity, a desired match cannot be fed to us live.   This doesn't happen often but it has happened.
5) whims of the scheduler who may or may not know what fans want (and may not ask AFANA either).
6) a change in the standings from the time the match was chosen until it is aired.   For example, Essendon was not in the top 4 two weeks ago.  So, it would have been a brilliant tipping move to select Geelong v Essendon in early May knowing it would be a 2 v 4 matchup.
7) the vagaries of the AFL schedule.  For example, some clubs want to play mostly on Friday night (e.g. Collingwood); others seem to get an excess of Sunday afternoons (e.g. the Perth clubs).  The result is that we see some too often and others not often enough based on the time slots available here.

AFANA makes it a point to let Setanta and the AFL know which matches fans want to see.  Ideally, we'd get all 8 live.  However, we are currently getting 2 per week live and that may be the limit this season until finals.  Also, given Setanta's precarious financial condition we may not get even this much next year.

From 1995 to 2006 AFANA worked diligently, with the support of many fans like yourself, to get live coverage.  It was a long and sometimes frustrating struggle.  Short of "on-demand" live coverage on a personal basis for every fan, there will always be some fan or some club left out.  I am thankful we have live coverage and hope Setanta continues in 2010.  We'll keep working to make it better so you can see the match you want.

Re: Match Selection by TV Networks

Thanks for the reply Rob. I understand that every club needs some coverage, otherwise we would end up with Coll, Carl and Ess games every week! Being a Bomber fan, I really appreciated the ANZAC and the Carlton games this year. Keep up the good work Brendan (Setanta USA)

Re: AFL TV Schedule for USA and Canada

Besides subscribing to Setanta (which I've done) what can we do to make sure that there's coverage in Canada next year? Last year Setanta almost always showed 2 live games plus one taped game per week. This gave a better choice of matches. Was the taped game dropped this year due to financial considerations, or are the ratings for AFL on Setanta generally low?

admincms's picture

Future of coverage

It never hurts to let Setanta know that you appreciate the coverage and want it to continue.  Beyond that, it's not clear what the average fan can do for Setanta.  If they survive, they may well have new ownership, and the programming priorities may change.  As it is, we'll have to wait and see.

I'm expecting a new chairman of AFANA to be named soon.  I'm pretty confident that AFANA will be working the AFL to make sure coverage continues some how.  Live coverage though could be tough to replace.

I've not heard any explanation of the reduction in coverage though financial considerations are surely a factor.  The one factor I am aware of is that Setanta signed a contract for live Russian soccer coverage.  It has conflicted with AFL coverage on several occasions.

America One

The America One game of the week on Saturdays has been picked up by the mid-Atlantic branch of the Comcast Network. This is the Comcast-owned former CN8 network, which was rebranded early in 2009. The Mid-Atlantic feed should be available on all Comcast systems from Baltimore through Richmond. Comcast systems north of Baltimore may get the Philadelphia feed, which is (according to Internet TV listings) not carrying the AFL games. In most markets, this channel will be found on Comcast channel 8. However, here in northside Richmond, VA, it's on Comcast 10. Historically, Comcast Network taped events have been subject to last-minute pre-emption for live sporting events -- or, unfortunately, for infomercials.

Re: Prelims live?

How can we watch the prelim finals live if they are broadcasting Friday night at midnight (Saturday) and Saturday/Sunday nights - games well and truly over. They should be Friday morning like 4.30 a.m. (CST) and Saturday morning same time. Anybody got any ideas? I can be emailed at debbiesharpe@gmail.com

Thanks

Re: Prelims live? - Read the schedule notes!

Dear Chicagocat:

If you read the schedule you will note the following code in on entries for each match of the Preliminary Finals:  #

And if you follow that to the notes at the bottom of the section you are looking at you will see this:

# Schedule expected to change as matches are Friday and Saturday "night" matches in Australia.

Pretty obvious, isn'it?  We publish the schedule as Setanta (or whatever network has coverage for that week and that year) provides it.  When it appears to us to be obviously wrong or likely to be changed, we so note it.  Always.  Every week for 13 years...

Sadoun is a good company but their prices on satellite equipment are kinda high. aeonsat has much cheaper prices for the exact same equipment.

admincms's picture

Thanks for the suggestion on aeonsat.

We'll add them to the page.    But I noted that some of the FTA listings were "out of stock" and saw no indication they offered installation.
